Genetics of Mathematical Aptitude

چکیده
Normative variation in mathematical aptitude (MA) is relevant to many aspects of societal functioning, in particular for occupations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Though elements of numerosity have been identified in some animals, complex MA is uniquely human. Several studies, using a variety of designs, have investigated the heritability of MA, and the extreme ends of the dimension of this trait – mathematics learning disability (MLD) and mathematical talent (MT). Initial estimates of the heritability of MA ranged from 0.2 to 0.9, while later studies identify more modest heritabilities for MA. Modest heritabilities have also been identified for MLD and MT. Despite this, genome-wide association studies have had limited success. Additionally, MAmay have similar genetic architectures to MLD and MT. Finally, while existing studies have tried to understand the genetic architecture of MA as a whole, different domains within MA may have different genetic architectures.

Relation of mathematical ability to psychosis in Iceland.
A study of mathematically gifted Icelanders demonstrates an increased risk of mental illness in their ranks. Psychotic disorders are also frequent among their relatives. Linkage of academic records with previously published data on the family distribution of psychosis reveals a pattern compatible with the hypothesis that high arousal plays a role in reasoning ability.
متن کاملThe Heritability of Aptitude and Exceptional Talent Across Different Domains in Adolescents and Young Adults
The origin of individual differences in aptitude, defined as a domain-specific skill within the normal ability range, and talent, defined as a domain specific skill of exceptional quality, is under debate. The nature of the variation in aptitudes and exceptional talents across different domains was investigated in a population based twin sample. Self-report data from 1,685 twin pairs (12-24 yea...
متن کاملSex differences in mathematical ability: fact or artifact?
A substantial sex difference in mathematical reasoning ability (score on the mathematics test of the Scholastic Aptitude Test) in favor of boys was found in a study of 9927 intellectually gifted junior high school students. Our data contradict the hypothesis that differential course-taking accounts for observed sex differences in mathematical ability, but support the hypothesis that these diffe...
متن کاملIndividual differences in left parietal white matter predict math scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test
Mathematical skills are of critical importance, both academically and in everyday life. Neuroimaging research has primarily focused on the relationship between mathematical skills and functional brain activity. Comparatively few studies have examined which white matter regions support mathematical abilities. The current study uses diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to test whether individual differ...
متن کاملGenotype by environment interaction in adolescents' cognitive aptitude.
In a replication of Turkheimer, Haley, Waldron, D'Onofrio, Gottesman II (2003, Socioeconomic status modifies heritability of IQ in young children. Psychological Science, 14:623-628), we investigate genotype-environment (G x E) interaction in the cognitive aptitude of 839 twin pairs who completed the National Merit Scholastic Qualifying Test in 1962. Shared environmental influences were stronger...
